Step by Step How to Do JV Deals on LinkedIn & Twitter
We all know or have learned in my earlier posts that doing Joint Venture (JV) deals is the key to taking your internet business to the next level. I know this is a long post but remember an average offer will get a 2% response in a JV deal so if you are working with partners with 50,000 people on their list a 2% response would mean that you would get 1000 sales instantly once you launch the JV. That is just from one JV deal. Once you get these steps down you can do JVs every week with just a few hours of work each month. Isn’t that worth reading this article?
Here is my step by step strategy for using LinkedIn to build JV Partners. As you can see unlike other blogs, products, or trainings that just give you the theory my training style is to give you step by step exactly what to do and exactly what to say at each step, of course you’ll customize things for your niche and situation. If you want help with this just leave a comment and I will contact you to work with you to implement this strategy as helping JV deals get done ultimately builds more partners for me.
Before we start you should build a target list of 25 authors, experts, other product marketers in your related Niche. Seek JVs with niche players first before trying to do a JV with a big time Internet Marketer. Try to target people with 10,000 followers or more, don’t waste your time on anyone with less then 5,000 followers. Try to go to networking events and meet these people so they can put a face to your name but I don’t recommend you pitch them at events because that is what all the other desperate newbies are doing. Try to be memorable and resist the urge to pitch.
Meeting them is not a requirement when you follow my system but it always helps. Also keep in mind the best marketers get about a 25% acceptance rate, sometimes the timing or chemistry is just not going to be right for the person to do a JV with you. So much like base ball if you get it right 25% of the time you are doing ok, if you get a deal 30% of the time you are hall of fame material.
First connect with your Target JV Partner on LinkedIn, in the invite tell him you love his blog and want to tell all your friends how great it is. Mention something specific in the blog you like and post a comment on the blog. No one would refuse this type of invite. Once the person accepts your invite you should be sure to do your homework by reading their profile thoroughly, reading their blog and book (if they have one), buying their product if you can afford it. You must be subscribing to their newsletter to stay in touch with what they are doing and with their personal updates.
Second Follow him on Twitter. When you Follow send him an @request which mentions something you like on his blog or the URL he has listed. Tell him you are going to DIGG it (social bookmark it). Also Try to Tweet a response to any questions or conversation he asks. Ideally see if you can tweet to him right while he is still on Twitter and engage him in a back and forth dialog about the topics he is already discussing in his Tweets. As an example if he is talking to another person about how he likes a certain web site chime in and offer your opinion supporting his point of view on that specific topic. Continue to Tweet him until he follows you, that is the first sign that you are starting a relationship. If he still does not follow you then send him a DM where you ask fopr him to follow you like this:” I a big fan and myh followers would luv to learn more about you, could you please follow me.”
Third see if this person has asked any questions on LinkedIn Answers and if so respond to them, while also writting the target JV partner a personal note telling him what a great question it was. See if you can answer other related questions on LinkedIn and then there is an option to recomend an expert, of course list the JV partner. Recommend his blog in your LinkedIn answers where you can put in a URL link. You are edifying this person and building up your relationship.
Fourth: Send him a LinkedIn e-mail telling him that you have built a similar niche network and that you would be willing to do some market research for him if he has some ideas he wanted to test out on your network. Ask him what projects he is working and what type of customer needs would be valuable to know more about? Then ask the question(s) that he gives you on LinkedIn Q&A, to your network/list, and in any groups you are a member of and join some more groups and ask them also. Report back to him with your findings, be honest but highlight all of the positive responses and let him know that you have people in your network that would be interested in what he is working on.
Fifth: Ask a Pertinent Question on LinkedIn - Really put a lot of thought into your question to make it a good one. What works well for me is doing a Search.Twitter.com for your niche key words and observing what people are saying and then asking about these observations on LinkedIn as this demonstrates that you are someone connected to multiple social media sites and shows that you are monitoring the buzz in your niche which is the type of thing an expert would do. Do not use the ”ask contact” option with any LinkedIn Questions as this will only ask your contacts and you want this to be a public question so it gets lot of exposure. Then use “forward LinkedIn question” to send it to several of your related contacts including the expert and say ” As a fellow Thought Leader in our industry I would really like to get your opinion on this question and provide a Tinyurl.com link to the question on LinkedIn. Now you have positioned yourself as a peer expert in your field with this flattering invite.
Six: When your JV target answers the question wait 1-2 days and then select his answer as the best answer even if it is not. When you do this LinkedIn allows you to write a note. So thank him for being helpful, compliment his answer, by saying “I really think we are on the same page and we should do something together some day.”
Seventh For one week continue to follow him on Twitter and chime in whenever you can with the topics he is asking. Write some articles on your blog that you think his audience would be interested in and send him these links through Twitter.
Eight: Contact him through LinkedIn saying ” I’ve got an idea for promoting your stuff lets chat”. Now take the conversation to the phone. Start the conversation with “Great to talk with you, I’ve been following you for so long. So what is the coolest thing you are working on right now? Let him answer. Then Focus the conversation on how you can promote his blog and products to your social network and list. Even if you are not that established with your following yet, let him know how you plan to be a player in your niche. If he is a good business person he will reciprocate and offer to promote your stuff. After talking about helping him, if needed you can say “I’ve got an idea that your followers are going to eat up and is going to make you look good”. Remember Thought Leaders are looking for great content they can give their followers. Position what you have to offer as great content. Try to wait until late in the conversation to talk money. Remember he gets probably gets pitches everyday about how he can make money by doing a JV with someone, it his job to guard his list and followers and only share quality content with them, that is the key to getting a loyal following.
Once the conversation shifts to money have some hard core facts and stats to offer him such as 20% of people on my list bought my product and 50% of those customers also enrolled in my continuity program/membershipsite. Do not lie, but use percentages to your advantage. If you had 5 out of 100 people sign up that is an honest 20%. The standard split is 50% of EVERYTHING. Do not get greedy, you want the deal to be lucrative for him so he has heavy incentives to make the JV a success. Offer to track his people that sign up on your squeeze page and to pay him a commission even if they sign up for up to a year later. Remember you are going to a JV deal with him every year now so think long term.
E-mail him direct links to your squeeze page and sales, do not make him sign up to see your sales page. Ask his advice to critique your sales pages (flattery) and ask him to include a free bonus of his stuff like an eBook or video that will not cost him anything. Remember his people are on his list because they love him, so they will be inclined to buy your product if he recommends it but even more so if they get something special from him. Ask him if he can do a brief interview where he asks you questions, you write the questions in advance for him so it won’t take up much of his time. You record the event and include this as part of your promotion or bonuses. Lastly on your check out page, instead of having just a “Thank You” page have an upsell offer of some of his products bundled together in a unique way that has not been done before. This gives him another chance for more sales and gives you will affiliate commission of 50% on his stuff from his own customers!
