What Social Media Site Should I Start With?

What Social Media Site Should I Start With is one of the most common questions I get. The answer is do not limit yourself to one site, this is a big mistake.

Setting up a social site should not be a big project. You should have an MS Word document with a template of what will go into your profile so you can use this over and over again to easily set up profiles on new social sites. More in later blog posts about what makes a GREAT profile.

Each site you are on gives you multiple entry points for inbound leads. If you are 10 sites with a GREAT profile and do nothing at all you may only get one lead per month from each site on average, but that still adds up to 10 leads every month. If you are on only one site you would have to work at that site for 10-20 hours each month to get those same 10 leads. So you are saving this time every month by being on multiple social sites.

Also each site you are on gives you multiple touch points with your connections. The more places they hear from you the faster they will come to know you, trust you, and do business with you. If you are only on one site you will only have one touch point which is not enough.

Connect all of your sites together and you only have to work at building on on site. I only build my network on Twitter because it is fast and easy. I then invite my followers over to LinkedIn, then from LinkedIn I invite them to be friends on Facebook, and finally to see my videos on Youtube. My growth on all 4 of my social sites is driven from Twitter.

I use Ping.FM to send out updates accross all of my sites. The others don’t any extra time to build or maintain. So there is no excuse not to be on multiple social sites. Add a new site into your portfolio every month, make it a goal for 2010.
